Understand the distinct roles of HEPA and carbon filters in air purifiers. This comparison explains what each captures, how they work together, and which replacement filter pack suits your needs.
Quick answer
HEPA filters capture 99.97% of microscopic particles like dust and pollen, while carbon filters absorb gases, odors, and VOCs. Most effective air purifiers use both stages together, but replacement needs differ by model and environment.
What each filter does best
A HEPA filter is a mechanical barrier that traps solid particles as small as 0.3 microns. It excels at removing dust, pet dander, mold spores, and pollen from the air. A carbon filter, on the other hand, uses activated charcoal to adsorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smoke, cooking smells, and chemical fumes. The two technologies target completely different pollutant types, which is why many purifiers combine them in a multi-stage system.
Lifespan and replacement frequency
HEPA filters typically last 6 to 12 months depending on usage and air quality. Carbon filters often wear out faster because the adsorption sites become saturated, especially in kitchens or homes with pets. For example, the Lasko Desktop Air Purifier (HF11200) carbon and VOC filter pack is rated for up to 4 months, while the Lasko LP300/LP450 HEPA and carbon pack is designed to last up to 1 year. Always check your model’s guidelines to avoid reduced performance.
HEPA vs carbon: key trade-offs
- Particle removal: HEPA filters are unmatched for capturing solid particles like dust, pollen, and pet dander. Carbon filters do not remove particles.
- Odor and gas control: Carbon filters adsorb smoke, cooking odors, and VOCs. HEPA filters have no effect on gases or smells.
- Filter lifespan: HEPA filters typically last 6–12 months. Carbon filters may need replacement every 3–4 months in high-odor environments. If you cook frequently or have pets, plan to replace carbon filters more often than HEPA filters.
